The School of Environmental and Geographical Sciences at Nottingham makes available an exhilarating surroundings for students and staff alike with the high standards of innovative teaching and research. Ranking 6th in the UK on a measure of research power in the most up-to-date Research Assessment Exercise, it also rated excellent in the Higher Education Funding Council for England assessment of teaching provision. MPhil, MRes and PhD degrees are being offered in Environmental and Geographical Sciences linked to the foundation areas of interest and research. All PhD applications are treated on an individual basis, with consideration given if there is a match between the research topic proposed and the resources available in the School.
Environmental science is an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical, biological and information sciences (including ecology, biology, physics, chemistry, zoology, mineralogy, oceanology, limnology, soil science, geology, atmospheric science, and geodesy) to the study of the environment, and the solution of environmental problems. Related areas of study include environmental studies and environmental engineering. Environmental studies incorporates more of the social sciences for understanding human relationships, perceptions and policies towards the environment. Environmental engineering focuses on design and technology for improving environmental quality in every aspect.
