Biotechnology is the scientific study of the practical application of living organisms - cells, bacteria and their components - in manufacturing and service industries.
Urgent and growing global problems related to medicine, food supplies, pollution of the environment and public health has made biotechnology an increasingly important field.
Biotechnology is multidisciplinary. It involves combining knowledge from microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology and chemistry, as well as chemical and process engineering. As such. the curriculum will cover key elements of these studies, providing insights into each area.
Applied cell and molecular biology; biochemistry; biology of diseases; chemistry; genetics and genetic engineering; legal. ethical and moral issues in biotechnology; microbiology; quantitative and statistical methods; transmission electron microscopy.
You will need at least three years to complete this course.
Prior study of biology and chemistry is required.
Graduates can work in research firms and laboratories, academic institutions and government establishments as well as marketing or manufacturing in various private organisations.
